Epoxy and polyaspartic are both protective coating chemistries used on concrete. They differ in properties such as cure behavior, UV stability and feel, and they are often combined in one system. Epoxy Panda’s standard garage system uses a resin base coat (epoxy or polyurea), a full decorative flake broadcast and a polyaspartic clear topcoat, and we recommend the combination that fits your project.

The short version
- Epoxy is a widely used resin for base coats. It is commonly chosen to bond to prepared concrete and build the body of a system.
- Polyurea is another resin used for base coats, with its own cure and handling characteristics.
- Polyaspartic is commonly used as a clear protective topcoat, partly because of its resistance to yellowing and color change under UV exposure compared with some other chemistries.
Why one floor often uses more than one
The layers of a coating system do different jobs. The base coat bonds to the concrete and carries the color. For a flake floor, the decorative flake is broadcast into the wet base coat. The topcoat sits on top as the wear surface that takes traffic, cleaning and sunlight. Using a different chemistry for each layer lets each do what it does best, so a hybrid is common.
Where the differences show up
- Cure behavior. Chemistries cure at different speeds and react differently to temperature and humidity, which affects how the job is planned and how soon a floor returns to use.
- UV stability. Some chemistries are more prone to yellowing in direct sun than others, which matters in a garage with an open door or sunny windows.
- Feel and finish. Sheen, texture and traction can differ by system and by topcoat choice.
What matters more than the product name
Surface preparation matters as much as the chemistry. A premium coating installed over poorly prepared concrete can still fail, so the slab is mechanically prepared, repaired where appropriate and checked for moisture before any system goes down.
The right system depends on the concrete, how the garage is used and the finish you want. We choose the system for the project, not by brand or a single product.
Common questions
What is the difference between epoxy and polyaspartic coatings?
Both are protective coating chemistries used on concrete. They differ in properties such as cure behavior, UV stability and feel, and they are often combined in one system.
What does Epoxy Panda use on garage floors?
Our standard garage system is a resin base coat (epoxy or polyurea), a full decorative flake broadcast and a polyaspartic clear topcoat. Some projects use polyaspartic throughout or a hybrid.
Is polyaspartic better than epoxy?
Neither is better for every job. They are often used together, with each chemistry placed where it performs best. The right system depends on your concrete, how the garage is used and the finish you want.
